Assignment - Find an Interesting Chemical Reaction
Search the Internet to find a chemical reaction that interests you. You will lead a demonstration of the chemical reaction in our classroom, so no producing chlorine gas, or anything unsafe like that.
For your reaction, I would like to know the following 6 things:
- The name of the reaction (if there is a name - some reactions do not have names)
- A link to the webpage where you found the chemical reaction.
- Write out the chemical names of each reactant (chemical that is consumed in the reaction) and each product (chemical that is produced by the reaction).
- For each reactant and product, identify it as an atom, covalent compound, ionic compound, or other molecules.
- Write out the chemical equation for the reaction.
- Is the reaction exothermic (releases energy) or endothermic (absorbs energy)?
For example, my reaction is the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. It uses a catalyst to speed up the reaction, but catalysts are never involved in the chemical reaction itself, so I do not include it in my answers.
- Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide

- Reactant: hydrogen peroxide
Products: liquid water, oxygen gas - Hydrogen peroxide: covalent compound
Water: covalent compound
Oxygen gas: covalent compound - 2 H2O2 --> 2 H2O + O2
- Exothermic
